Session #1 Myths About Addiction
A lot of people think they already know what addiction is but most of what we hear isn’t true. These myths can make people feel ashamed, misunderstood, or afraid to ask for help. They also make it harder for friends and families to support someone who’s struggling.
In this session, we’re breaking down the top myths teens often hear about addiction so you can understand what’s real, what’s not, and why the truth actually matters. This is your chance to clear up the confusion, challenge the stereotypes, and learn how addiction really works.
Session #2 Addiction and the Brain
Addiction is a chronic brain disease that’s more
about the neurology of the brain than the outward
manifestations of behavioral problems and poor
choices, according to a group of addiction medicine
professionals. In this session, we will have an open
discussion about the following:
- How addiction alters your brain’s reward system
- How impulse control is also altered
- Impaired control and judgement problems
- How addiction can cause cognitive changes
- How addiction can cause emotional changes
Session #3 Understanding Your “Drug of Choice”
Everyone’s experience with addiction looks a little different. In this session, you’ll get the chance to ask questions and talk openly about the specific substances or behaviors that matter most to you.
We’ll cover a range of topics, including:
- THC (cannabis/weed)
- Alcohol
- Stimulants
- Hallucinogens
- Ecstasy/MDMA
- Behavioral addictions like screen time or gaming
This is a safe space to learn the facts, clear up confusion, and understand how different substances and behaviors can affect your mind, body, and daily life. No judgement — just real talk and honest information.
Session #4 Triggers & Cravings
When it comes to recovery, the question isn’t “Will I have triggers or cravings?” It’s “When will they show up?”
Triggers and cravings are a normal part of the process. They aren’t about willpower or “being strong enough.” They happen because your brain has learned certain patterns over time, and those patterns can automatically spark cravings.
In this session, we’ll focus on:
- Understanding what triggers are and why they happen
- Learning how cravings actually work in the brain
- Recognizing your own personal triggers
- Creating a plan to avoid or manage them in healthy ways
This session is all about building awareness and giving you tools to stay in control even when your brain is trying to pull you in a different direction.
Session #5 Planning My Recovery Journey
Every destination needs a map and recovery is no different. Having your own personal plan is a huge part of staying on track. Your plan might focus on harm reduction, abstinence, or a mix of both, depending on what makes sense for you.
In this session, we’ll talk about why planning matters and how to set goals that actually work. We’ll walk you through creating SMART goals. Goals that are:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Realistic
- Time-framed
Setting goals gives you direction and helps you stay hopeful, focused, mindful, and accountable as you move forward. This is your chance to map out the path to the future you want.
Session #6 Healthy Relationships & Boundaries
The people in your life can either lift you up or drag you down and in recovery, that matters more than ever.
Healthy relationships make you feel supported, respected, encouraged, and valued. Toxic ones can leave you feeling drained, anxious, ashamed, or even unsafe.
In this session, we’ll talk about:
- What healthy vs. unhealthy relationships look like
- How different people in your life (family, friends, partners, coworkers) impact your recovery and sometimes without even realizing it
- Why boundaries are important
- How to set clear, healthy boundaries that protect your well-being
This session will help you understand what you deserve in relationships and how to build connections that support your healing, not hurt it.
Session #7 Managing Anxiety & Depression
Feeling stressed, worried, sad, or overwhelmed is something everyone experiences from time to time. But when these feelings become intense, long-lasting, or start interfering with daily life, they can be signs of anxiety or depression. Both are real medical conditions and not a weakness and they can affect your thoughts, emotions, body, and behaviors.
Sometimes people turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with these feelings, but self-medicating can make things worse and increase the risk of addiction.
In this session, we’ll focus on understanding what’s happening and learning tools to manage it. We’ll cover:
- What anxiety and depression really are
- How these conditions show up in your body and mind (racing heart, tense muscles, racing thoughts, low energy, or lack of motivation)
- The connection between anxiety, depression, and substance use
- Healthy ways to cope with stress and heavy emotions
- How to find small moments of joy and stay motivated
This session is all about giving you the knowledge and strategies to feel more in control, build positive mental health, and make choices that support your recovery.
Session #8 Coping Strategies
Recovery isn’t just about quitting a substance or behavior, it’s about changing your life. And while change can be challenging, it can also be one of the most rewarding things you ever do.
In this session, we’ll look at healthy coping strategies that can help you move forward and take control of your life in a positive way. We’ll talk about what it’s really like to live with an addiction and explore the factors that make things harder (risk factors) and the ones that help protect you (protective factors).
You’ll learn how to:
- Understand what influences your choices and behaviors
- Identify the supports and strengths you already have
- Replace unhealthy coping with strategies that respect your mind, body, and health
- Build skills you can use in everyday life
This session is all about helping you feel more capable, confident, and prepared to handle whatever comes your way without turning back to old habits.
Session #9 Self-Love & Self-Compassion
You’ve probably heard the saying, “You are your own worst critic.” For most people, it’s true. We judge ourselves, compare ourselves to others, and can be really hard on ourselves especially when we feel like we’re not “good enough” or not meeting expectations.
This session is all about learning how to treat yourself differently.
We’ll explore what self-compassion really means and how to practice being kinder to yourself, especially during tough moments or painful emotions. Instead of beating yourself up, you’ll learn how to respond with understanding, patience, and care.
Research shows that self-compassion can:
- Reduce anxiety, stress, and depression
- Lower the emotional fuel that often drives addiction
- Increase happiness, confidence, and life satisfaction
In this session, we’ll learn practical ways to build more self-love and self-compassion so you can start supporting yourself the way you’d support someone you care about.
Session #10 Crisis & Stress Management
Stress and crisis are a part of life —nobody gets to avoid them. While you can’t always control what happens, you can control how you respond. When things get overwhelming, it’s easy to fall into old habits or unhealthy coping skills. The more you rely on those patterns, the more automatic they become, and the harder life feels.
This session is about breaking that cycle.
We’ll talk about:
- How stress and crisis affect your thoughts, emotions, and decisions
- Why unhealthy coping strategies might feel helpful in the moment but end up making things worse
- How to replace those habits with healthy coping skills
- Building your own Crisis Management Toolbox -a set of practical tools you can turn to when life gets tough
By the end of this session, you’ll have a plan and strategies you can rely on when you’re feeling overwhelmed, instead of falling back into patterns that hold you back.
Session #11 Celebration & Moving Forward
This final session is all about celebrating YOU, every small step, every tough moment you pushed through, and every positive change you made along the way. Recovery isn’t a quick fix; it’s a lifelong journey. But you’ve built skills, insight, and strength that will carry you forward.
In this closing session, we’ll focus on:
- Recognizing and celebrating your progress
- Reflecting on the changes you’ve made both big and small
- Talking about how to stay connected to supportive people and healthy communities
- Exploring ways to keep your recovery strong long after the program ends
This session marks the end of the program, but definitely not the end of your growth. Your journey continues and you don’t have to walk it alone.
