Session #1 Myths of Addiction
Many people have pre-conceived notions and ideas when it comes to understanding the addictions process. Almost everything we think we know about addiction is wrong. These myths hurt families and friends – and they make it harder for people to get well. With all the stigma that surrounds the disease, we wanted to break down the top ten myths that we hear about from families that have an addicted loved one.
Session #2 Addiction as a Brain Disease
Addiction is a chronic brain disease that’s more
about the neurology of the brain than the outward
manifestations of behavioral problems and poor
choices, according to a group of addiction medicine
professionals. In this session, we will have an open
discussion about the following:
- How addiction alters your brain’s reward system
- How impulse control is also altered
- Impaired control and judgement problems
- How addiction can cause cognitive changes
- How addiction can cause emotional changes
Session #3 Drug of Choice
This session will allow each participant the opportunity to ask questions and discuss topics specific to THC, Opioids, Benzodiazepines, Alcohol, Stimulants, Hallucinogens, Ecstasy (MDMA), Behavioral Addictions.
Session #4 Stages of Change & Levels of Involvement
In this session you will do a self assessment utilizing the level of involvement model and the stages of change model which identifies the stages that people go through when changing behavior. Self reflection and acceptance of oneself is one of the
first and most important steps of recovery.
Acknowledgement of where you are at, in this
present moment is essential for developing your
goals for recovery and living the life you desire to
live.
Session #5 Triggers and Cravings
The question is not, will I experience triggers and
cravings, but rather WHEN will I experience triggers
and cravings? We must recognize that experiencing
triggers and cravings is not simply about having
enough will power to abstain but in fact is more
related to the pattern that has over time developed
in your brain that automatically triggers and
increases cravings. In this session, participants will
self reflect on personal triggers and develop a plan
to avoid them.
Session #6 Planning for your Journey of Recovery
For every destination there is a road to get there. Having a personal plan for your recovery is crucial. This may include harm reduction or abstinence based goals. During this session we will highlight the importance of creating a plan for your journey by creating smart goals which are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and anchored with a time frame. Having goals will keep you hopeful, mindful, focused, and accountable.
Session #7 Coping Strategies
Your addiction has given you the opportunity to
change your life. Changing your life is what makes
recovery both difficult and rewarding. This session
provides a framework in assisting participants to
move forward with healthy ways of coping and
changing their circumstance. Participants will
explore the experience of living with an addiction, be
provided with an understanding of contributions and
protective factors and learn how to integrate
strategies in the way that respects the person and
supports their health.
Session #8 Managing Anxiety
Feeling tense, stressed, worried and even panicked
at certain times when under pressure is a normal
human response. Everybody feels anxious from
time to time. Anxiety becomes a problem when it is
intense and prolonged, and when it starts to get in
the way of day-to-day functioning. This session will
focus on identifying what is anxiety, the
interconnection with addiction, how it shows up in
our bodies and what can we do about it
Session #9 Depression
Depression is not simply a temporary change in mood
or a sign of weakness. It is a real medical condition
with many emotional, physical, behavioural and
cognitive symptoms. The symptoms of depression
can drive some people toward substance use to cope
with their condition. However, consuming drugs or
alcohol to self-medicate depression symptoms can
increase the risk for addiction. Even when living with
depression, it is possible to develop positive mental
health. This session explores positive mental health
by finding ways to enjoy life, meet goals and cope
with stress. This session will teach ways to improve
mental health despite living with depression.
Session #10 Healthy Relationships & Boundaries
Healthy relationships will make you feel valued,
supported, challenged, encouraged and hopeful.
On the other hand, toxic relationships can be
manipulating, blaming, bullying, abusive and
violent which will have you feeling depressed,
hopeless, anxious and full of shame. Whether it is
spouses, family members, friends or co-workers
everyone has a part to play in your recovery,
knowingly and unknowingly. Being able to set
appropriate and healthy boundaries in your
relationships and life will set you on the path of
healing and recovery.
Session #11 Crisis and Stress Management
Crisis and Stress are unfortunately a reality of life.
While we can’t always control our circumstances, we
can control how you respond to them. At times, it is
easy to fall into the pattern of ineffective and
unhealthy coping. The more we rely on these
unhealthy patterns the more they become engrained
in our everyday life. These unhealthy strategies of
coping only seek to destroy the potential you have
for a happy healthy life. In this session we discuss
healthy coping strategies and will develop a crisis
management toolbox to rely on when you are faced
with difficult circumstances.
Session #12 Trauma
Research shows that the majority of the population
has experiences at least one Adverse Childhood
Experience. These trauma based adversities are
predictive of a multitude of challenging physical,
mental and social outcomes throughout a person’s
lifetime. This session will provide a basic review of
trauma, explore how it is created and stored in the
brain, body and nervous system. There will be
discussion on how substances and their short and
long-term effects impact people dealing with
trauma symptoms.
Session #13 Mindfulness
The word “Mindfulness” is popping up in all kinds of
places these days, in education, healthcare,
corporate board rooms and even in sport leagues.
What exactly is mindfulness and why practice it? This
session will explore the concepts of mindfulness, the
benefits for practicing and how it relates to relapse
prevention for addiction. Participants will learn how
to begin to implement mindfulness into daily life
both formally and informally as well as how to apply
it to the management of urges that can derail
sobriety.
Session #14 Self Compassion
Have you ever heard the saying you are your own
worst critic?” This tends to be the case for most
people, we are hard on ourselves, particularly if we
get the sense that we don’t meaure up in some
way. This session is designed to explore the
concepts of self compassion and how to cultivate
self-compassion by teaching skills for responding
in a kind, compassionate way whenever you are
experiencing painful emotions. Research shows
self-compassion reduces depression, anxiety and
stress – issues that often fuel addiction. It also has
been linked with greater happiness and life
satisfaction.

of happiness hedonia and eudaimonia. Each affect
the body and mind in profoundly different ways.

principle and moral practice of concern for
happiness of other human beings or other animals
which will create a sense of belonging, reduce
isolation and simply just makes you feel good!
