Melissa Potter

BScPN, RPN

Psychiatric Nurse Therapist

I was always drawn to work in a helping profession. There was a lot of addiction and correlating mental health concerns within my extended family system, which drew me to the psychiatric nursing program. I wanted to learn more about the brain-body connection and why some individuals struggled more than others with these complex, misunderstood and highly stigmatized challenges.

I worked as an acute care psychiatric nurse before getting hired at a private residential addiction recovery centre, where I spent a year and a half building my clinical skills and working alongside leading addiction specialists in Manitoba. I later pursued further counselling training and completed EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) certification through Elevate EMDR Academy, specializing my skill set in trauma alongside addictions. My experience has given me a broader understanding of the mental health concerns frequently connected to addiction. Working closely with individuals in intensive recovery programs, I also came to see how often families and partners need support of their own.

My Therapeutic Approach

I believe every individual has the innate capacity for growth and healing. My approach is client-centred, strengths-based, and trauma-informed. You are the expert in your life, and I will individualize the support you seek, building off your current strengths and resilience. I incorporate a holistic approach to therapy that views the individual through the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, while considering the social and environmental structures that may impact you, positively or negatively. I honour the diversity of the human experience and strive to create an inclusive and affirming space where individuals from all backgrounds and identities feel seen, heard and valued. My work is informed and inspired by attachment theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and social justice perspectives.

Areas I Can Help with and Specialties

I specialize in addictions and substance use — whether you’re an individual struggling with addiction, seeking or in recovery, or a family member or partner who needs support with a loved one in addiction or recovery. I also specialize in co-occurring mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, and trauma, and offer EMDR for trauma processing. I’m currently completing Gottman Method Level One training to bring couples counselling into my practice.

Hobbies and Interests

I love yoga, meditation, and breathwork practices. I also enjoy reading, learning, hiking, camping, travelling, and adventure. I love photography, art, and music, and enjoy having dinner and dessert with friends and family.

Udynamics

I understand that talking about mental health can be challenging, but sharing your experiences can be incredibly liberating and healing. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or simply need someone to listen, I am here for you. It’s okay to feel vulnerable, and seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Udynamics

I took my training to become an integrative nutrition health coach because I wanted to be more connected with how my own body worked a functioned. I was used to being sick every 10-14 days with a cold or a flu and I wanted to learn how to build my immune system and my digestion. Every few months I would get an eczema flare up, acne or something skin-wise that was already ‘remedied’ with a steroid cream. This never solved any issue and months later it would pop up on another patch of skin. There wasn’t any problem-solving and only surface solutions.
